We are looking for candidates for an early stage researcher (ESR) position in the area of approximate computing. The main focus of this research will be the study of variable- and mixed-precision computing techniques to improve energy efficiency. The proposed activities will include the study of advanced ML techniques and their integration into compilation toolchains (e.g., GCC and LLVM) and parallel runtime environments (e.g., OpenMP).

The ESR position is funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (more info in the call below), and it is associated with the Ph.D. Program in Data Science and Computation at the University of Bologna. The net salary for these positions is set by EU standard rules with specific country adjustments, and it is very competitive compared to average Italian salaries.

Position #1: Big Data Analysis and Decision Support Systems for Smart Healthcare applications

Job description
Smart Healthcare applications represent today a hot research field, including remote health monitoring solutions enriched with AI algorithms for the automatic detection and prediction of risky and adverse health conditions of specific user categories (e.g., frail older adults, subjects affected by chronic diseases). To this aim, data derived from IoT systems are enriched with sensing data derived from personal and wearable devices in order to provide a complete picture of the user's health status, including physical, cognitive and social conditions, on a long-term period.
A research assistant position is open in this area for the definition and evaluation of AI algorithms for anomalous behaviour detection and risk prediction both in specific health domains (mainly nutrition, sleep disorders, and stress conditions) and integrated in a multidimensional evaluation of frailty condition in older adults. These algorithms should also be designed to be integrated in a mobile health (m-health) solution to guarantee the processing of sensitive data directly on the personal mobile device and to provide a personalised and motivational feedback to the monitored subject. The algorithms will be validated both on available datasets and on new datasets collected through the application of prototype solutions in real scenarios and pilot studies based on the collaboration with medical units.
The Research assistant will work on the following topics:
(i) Design and evaluation of AI algorithms for anomalous behaviour detection and risk prediction based on heterogeneous sensing data.
(ii) Integration of the proposed algorithms in a prototype m-health application.
(iii) Participation in the definition and deployment of pilot studies with real subjects.

Candidate profile
Candidates should have a MSc degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related disciplines, and a proven track record of excellent University grades. Preferably, the topic of the MSc thesis should be in one of the relevant research areas (Artificial Intelligence, BigData analytics, distributed systems, e-health applications).

Position #2: Cooperative Ubiquitous Opportunistic Charging with Intelligent Battery Aging Mitigation

Job description
Battery aging (the loss of battery's capacity and internal resistance growth) is an emerging challenge for portable devices carried by mobile users. Due to the fact that newer devices are becoming more feature-rich and resource demanding, they are subjected to more charge-discharge cycles compared to their older counterparts; a pattern which increases their battery aging, and enables them to require higher power and more expensive and bigger batteries. Individualized battery aging mitigation and user profiling, which do not take into account neither other users in the networked population nor emerging energy sharing technologies like peer-to-peer wireless power transfer, are not uncovering the full potential of intelligent charging.
One post-doc position is open in this area, for the design and deployment of ubiquitous charging intelligence in order to cooperatively mitigate battery aging, radically optimize energy redistributions, and unorthodoxically increase user quality of experience. The envisioned approach will deliver fine-grained modelling and algorithmic exploitation of not only static wired charging but also wireless energy sharing technologies, and will provide a novel combination of theoretical tools, socio-technical extensions, practical simulations and (potentially) limited field trials.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on the following topics:
(i) Rigorous socio-technical modelling for populations of cooperative mobile users
(ii) Algorithmic development for intelligent, network-wide, wired/wireless charging with battery aging mitigation
(iii) Performance evaluation through large scale simulations and/or real device experimentation

Candidate profile
Ideal candidates should have (or are about to obtain) a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related disciplines, and a proven track record of publications in relevant top-tier journals and conferences. Preferably, the topic of the PhD should have been in one of the related research areas (mobile computing, WSNs, opportunistic networks, IoT). The positions will be in the Ubiquitous Internet (UI) RU of IIT-CNR in Pisa, Italy (http://cnd.iit.cnr.it). We have an interesting 2-year postdoctoral position in next generation on-body sensor networks at Uppsala University. The project is on novel applications in the area of Internet of Senses. The project envisions interactive applications that self-modify their physical properties – their shape, colour, stiffness, temperature, texture or permittivity in response to bodily rhythms, movements or other sensor input. The project is multi-disciplinary with partners from low-power networking, human computer interaction as well as material science. The project has a systems approach with a lot of prototyping of software, hardware, interaction and communication, so we are looking for candidates with a broad interest ranging from low-power networking (including physical layer, knowledge in antennas), low-power hardware design and development up to human computer interaction. The Centre for Hardware Security at TalTech, led by Prof. Samuel Pagliarini, invites applications for two postdoctoral researcher positions. The Centre conducts research in the area of Hardware Security focusing on trustworthy integrated circuit (IC) design, electronic design automation (EDA) for secure systems, hardware trojans, reverse engineering, circuit obfuscation, crypto hardware, and other similar topics.

• The first position comes with a flexibility to assign any topic that falls within the list given above.
• The second position is project funded and therefore has a more narrow scope: development of a synthesis-based strategy for obfuscation of digital circuits.

Both positions are expected to lead to innovative research that will be validated in silicon. A tapeout is therefore expected by the end of 2021.

We are looking for motivated candidates with a strong background in circuit design. Candidates must have completed a PhD program (or be about to complete). Previous expertise on Hardware Security is highly desirable but experience in other related areas (IC design, test, verification, etc.) can also be considered. The candidates are expected to have the following core skills:
• Ability to describe digital circuitry (preferably in Verilog)
• Ability to write C++/python scripts for building simple CAD tools
• Familiarity w/ Cadence tools for IC design (Genus, Innovus, Virtuoso, etc.)
• Strong writing skills (English)

Other skills are considered a plus:
• FPGA prototyping
• Familiarity with EDA tools from other vendors (Calibre, ICC, DC, etc.)
• Hands-on experience with tapeouts of digital ICs
• In-depth understanding of hardware/software boundaries and security implications
• In-depth understanding of crypto algorithms and their hardware implementations
• Publication(s) in topics related to IC design and security
• Previous research in fault-resilience, reliability, and/or verification

Project: PROPHET-2

The project purpose is the study of strategies for building parallel applications in heterogeneous and/or reconfigurable platforms. The project focuses on practical cases of interest in engineering and industrial environments, including applications in the fields of fluid dynamics, material resistance or image processing. The objective is to improve and exploit programming tools and runtime systems for this kind of applications on highly-heterogeneous and distributed computing systems, maximizing portability and efficiency in terms of performance and energy.

Tasks of the post-doc researcher:

Lead project tasks related to the development of abstractions and programming tools for managing distributed systems with heterogeneous devices, including multi- and many-core systems, coprocessors (like GPUs) and/or reconfigurable systems (as FPGAs). Apply parallelization and optimization techniques on scientific applications described in the project summary. Dissemination of results and international promotion of the techniques and tools developed (presentations, tutorials in conferences, etc.)

Possibility to teach up to 80 hours per year in the Computer Science department, in order to get teaching experience.

Salary: 30.000 Eur. per year (before taxes).
Duration: 2 years. Starting Feb/Apr 2021

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science (EEMCS) is establishing a Centre for Networked and Embedded Systems Research. This centre studies the architectures and protocols for secure networked and embedded systems, with an emphasis on resource-constrained networked embedded systems, and their application to domains such as wireless sensor networks, automotive, the Internet of Things, and energy systems.

A crucial research topic of the centre is on efficient embedded computations. To strengthen the research in this domain, we are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic colleagues for Assistant/Associate/Full Professor positions within the chair for Computer Architecture and Embedded Systems. Within this theme you will perform research on computer architectures for networked embedded systems. Prof. Xinmiao Zhang is looking for highly-motivated Ph.D. students to join her lab ( vlsiArc.engineering.osu.edu) at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering of The Ohio State University. Our graduate program is ranked at 22nd in the most recent US News ranking.

In particular, 2 RA positions are available in Spring or Fall 2021 for hardware accelerator design of non-binary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) decoders and fully homomorphic encryption (FHE). NB-LDPC codes are among the best candidates for error correction in next-generation digital communication and storage systems. FHE is a technique that allows computations to be directly carried out on encrypted data, and is a key enabler for secure cloud or distributed computing. These projects are in collaboration with high-tech companies. Internships may also be available through the project. Good math and analytical background is required. Prior experience on error-correcting coding, or number theory, or related topics is preferred for these 2 positions.

The research of our group spans the areas of coding schemes and system architecture design for next-generation memories and digital communications, hardware security, post-quantum cryptography, and machine learning. Our research translates theoretical advancements to highly efficient practical implementations through integrated algorithmic and architectural optimizations. Students interested in these research areas are also encouraged to apply.
