- Beca FPU en el Color Imaging Lab del Departamento de Óptica de la Universidad de Granada (Spain). Received: 24/10/2019.
Despite the advances in the aviation industry, bad visibility still is an important issue for pilots, especially during critical operations such as approach and landing. Recently new rules were published for landing operations with enhanced flight vision system (EFVS). A big challenge in EFVSs is to improve image quality with low visibility, in adverse weather conditions such as with fog or haze.
Under fog or haze images are degraded due to scattering and attenuation of atmospheric particles, reducing the contrast and visibility, changing the color and making the object features difficult to identify by a humans and by computer vision systems. This degradation depends on the distance, the density of atmospheric particles and on the wavelength. The techniques to eliminate this degradation, named as dehazing (or defogging), are crucial in EFVS and other applications such as air and maritime transport, surveillance, driver assistance systems, remote sensing.
Dehazing is a multidisciplinary challenge, since it requires the knowledge of several fields: meteorology to model fog or haze, physical models to predict how light is affected by the atmosphere, and computer vision & image processing to recover the parameters of the scene.
For most scientific and technological applications of dehazing, including EFVS in aviation industry, it is essential that methods work automatically, in real time, without user’s interaction and without knowing atmospheric parameters. Our group proposed in 2015 a method based on the dichromatic model of atmospheric scattering and on the constancy of the response ratio of a camera's RGB sensors, that only requires a previous segmentation of the image to group the pixels located at the same distance.
Recently technological advances in image sensors and spectral filtering have allowed the proliferation of multispectral and hyperspectral systems for image capture in a wide range of applications. However, they have not yet been used in dehazing methods despite their potential.
Requisitos de los candidatos/as:
• Grado en Física, Informática, Telecomunicaciones, Matemáticas, o área similar.
• Máster en áreas afines.
• Competencia lingüística en inglés (mínimo B2).
• Conocimiento de lenguaje de programación tipo Matlab, Python, C++, etc.

- PhD position in morphogenesis of complex networks at Université Le Havre Normandie (France). Received: 15/09/2019.
Morphogenesis of complex networks - Application to the urban fabric
PhD advisor : D. Olivier
PhD Co-advisors : S. Balev, A. Dutot, J. Jiménez
Research lab : LITIS - Le Havre, France.
Keywords : complex system, self-organisation, morphogenesis, complex networks, reaction-diffusion model, cellular automata
Job description
We are hiring a PhD student with interests in complex systems, self-organisation, morphogenesis of graphs, complex networks and cellular automata. The PhD candidate will integrate the team RI2C at LITIS lab in Le Havre, France. In particular, we want to model the process of creation and evolution of the shape and structure of the street networks of the urban fabric. This subject is a continuation of a first thesis on the morphogenesis of road networks directed by a set of forces defined by a process of reaction-diffusion, based on an irregular automaton. In this work a temporally coherent and environment-constrained network generation model is proposed. We want to study the feedback and feedforward between the network and its environment and to define metrics to characterize and compare existing and generated networks. The model representing complex networks that we use are spatial temporal graphs where nodes are arranged in a Euclidean space of dimension 2 or 3. In these graphs the temporal dimension is added in order to capture the dynamic aspects and the impact on and from the environment.

Scientific Context:
Modern multi-core System-on-Chip (SoC) technologies in embedded computing systems pose new challenges for safety critical and real-time applications due to (i) increased temporal coupling between processing cores, (ii) higher degree of software integration and (iii) increased uncertainty in the hardware timing model that is used in the development and certification of embedded software for safety critical real-time systems (like avionics, autonomous automotive systems, production robots, etc.). In multi-core architectures, coupling across distinct software partitions arises because of shared hardware resources (like cache, main memory, I/O, and dedicated hardware engines), and result in loss of composability. In other words, when two software components are composed (i.e., simultaneously executed), the effect that one has on the performance of another can be significant, resulting in unexpected temporal behavior. The problem of inter-core performance interference in multi-core architectures is well known and has been largely studied in literature [1, 2].
Software-level performance isolation techniques have been extensively investigated, but they come with high overheads, work at a coarse granularity, and often require complex analysis techniques to derive real-time guarantees [3]. Recently, however, hardware manufacturers have started to integrate programmable logic (FPGA) onto multi-core SoCs. The tight coupling of FPGA and traditional CPUs opens the road to a whole new set of techniques to perform smart memory resource management. In fact, one can define new hardware modules in charge of implementing high-level policies on memory traffic that are enforced at the granularity of individual memory transactions.
Research:
The PostDoc will work on resource management for real-time heterogeneous SoC. He/She will research, develop, and evaluate innovative resource management solutions to address or mitigate contention at several levels (interconnects, caches, memories, etc). The candidate will closely work with other PostDocs and PhD students. While based mostly in TUM, the candidate will also coordinate and interact either in person or remotely with the research team at BU.
Requirements:
The candidate is required to have a PhD degree in computer science or electrical computer engineering and preferably should have a strong background in computer architecture and FPGA programming, as well as in real-time systems theory and operating systems. Efficient communication skills (oral and written) in English are required.
Work position and application:
The position is full-time and paid according to pay scale “TV-L, E13 or E14”, depending on the qualifications. The position is open to applicants worldwide.
Your complete application consists of the following documents, which should be sent as PDF files:
- CV with photo
- One-page cover letter (clearly indicating available start date as well as relevant qualifications, experience and motivation)
- University certificates and transcripts BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees)
- Contact details of up to three referees

- Assistant professor in Embedded and/or Real-time Computer Systems at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands). Received: 07/05/2019, closing date: 19/05/2019.
The Parallel Computing Systems (PCS) group at the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is looking for an Assistant professor (tenure track) in the area of embedded and/or real-time computer systems.
The analysis of extra-functional system properties, such as performance / real-time behaviour, energy consumption and dependability, is of paramount importance to the design of embedded and cyber-physical computing systems. Such analysis becomes, however, increasingly challenging because of the growing complexity of embedded computer systems: They integrate more and more processing elements, typically heterogeneous, sometimes in a distributed context, yielding complex systems of systems that often have an intimate interaction with the physical environment (i.e., cyber-physical systems of systems). Moreover, their application workloads become increasingly dynamic and unpredictable, and consequently, their underlying system architectures gradually become (more) adaptive to exploit the workload dynamism and to provide dynamic quality-of-service trade-offs. Are you interested in addressing these challenges? Let us know how you and your research can help to further strengthen and extend the PCS research in this strategically important domain.

- PhD position on Drones and 5G at the Université de Lorraine (France). Received: 22/03/2019, deadline: 30/04/2019.
PhD Opening at the LORIA Lab, Université de Lorraine, France on Exploiting synergies of UAV networks and 5G
A PhD position is available at the Loria Lab of the University of Lorraine, France. The candidate will join the SIMBIOT research team. The position is available from October 2019.
Graduate students at the M.Sc. or B.Sc. level with background in Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Science are encouraged to apply.
Context and objectives
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are quickly spreading into several fields of civilian and commercial applications, such as infrastructure inspection, event filming, disaster management, precision-agriculture. To realize UAV applications, it is necessary to design and develop innovative wireless communication technologies and networked cooperative schemes, not only to support the UAV operations and ensure their safe operations, but also to enable the high-capacity mission-related data transmissions for rate-demanding applications. As 5G communications promise astonishing improvements in performance (e.g., 100x data rates, 1000x connected devices, 1/10x energy consumption, 1/5x data latency), in addition to service management and orchestration, and network function virtualization, the integration of UAVs into 5G (and beyond) systems is a promising technology to achieve such goals. The usage of UAV fleets in 5G can, on one hand, assist the terrestrial communications in 5G, which are referred to as UAV-assisted 5G communications, and on the other hand, it can boost incredibly the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, leading to an Internet of Intelligent Things, comprising not only objects but also UAV and other intelligent devices. In order to manage UAV fleets in 5G, two crucial scientific questions must be addressed: the design and development of network mechanisms to handle UAV “virtualized” capabilities, the formulation of services management and mapping with UAV fleets capabilities as mathematical optimization problems under energy constraints.
Position description
By leveraging the experience of the SIMBIOT team on UAV networks, the PhD student will design and evaluate new algorithms for managing UAV fleets in order to exploit 5G communications architecture and satisfy 5G communication requirements. In this sense, the UAV fleets can be seen as either a “tool” to accomplish a specific mission requested by the end user, and/or as a 5G core network extension to increase coverage. In both case, networking and optimization schemes are needed. Therefore, the student will focus on the following research directions:
• Definition of network-aware algorithms of movement for accomplishing the UAV missions and/or extending the network coverage by leveraging our experience with controlled mobility in wireless networks.
• Integration of UAV fleet control into the reference 5G communications architecture,
• Development of innovative models and algorithms for managing UAV services and designing UAV-based 5G networks, extending the current state-of-the-art.
Candidate's profile
- Knowledge of UAV communication architectures/protocols as well as of 5G communication architecture.
- Practical skills in designing and implementing networking protocols for controlled mobility devices.
- Advanced programming skills in C++/Java and Matlab, knowledge of network simulators.
- High proficiency in English

Missions
Performance and Safety Analysis of Train to Train communications in the context of virtual coupling of trains.
Virtual coupling between two trains is under development. The system will be based on the use of wireless communications between the two vehicles (V2V). Consequently, the safety of the wireless link should be analysed. Several wireless communications systems are studied to answer the need of virtual coupling of two trains. No choice has been yet decided. The technology assessment will be performed within the Shift2rail program.
Several technologies are considered: ITS-G5 coming from automotive world, 60 GHz link based on 5G technology and LTE-A system (Long Term Evolution-Advanced) which is also consider for other railways applications, particularly Train-to-Ground links. Whatever will be the chosen system to answer the virtual coupling needs, the failures of the wireless link jeopardize the safety level. Thus, it is essential to guarantee a level of trust for the communication system that achieves this wireless link. This guarantee is expressed by the railway safety standards (EN 50126, 50129, 50159) according to the operating safety parameters FDMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety). The dependability analysis then seeks to identify and characterize all sources of errors or failures degrading the wireless communication link in order to evaluate, in view of these disturbances, the quality and the risk associated with the transmission system.
Based on the safe virtual coupling application definition, the aim of the postdoctoral position is first to characterize the service interruption due to communication errors and to define the critical events. More precisely, occurrence probabilities of single errors will be first analysed. Then, we will look for probabilistic analytical expressions of several temporal conditions that lead to critical events. In parallel we will follow a simulation approach with Petri net model in order to prove the accuracy of this analytical approach [1]. We would like to follow the methodology proposed by [2] in another context. The main difficulty of this research lies in the estimation of the degradation suffered by the radio signals, the impact of the traffic load of the system and in particular the impact of the choices concerning the system architecture.

One position co-located at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) addresses PhD topic no. 4 “Distributed Self-Healing Infrastructure for High-Speed Scientific Data Processing”.
Most advanced physics meets highly dependable high performance embedded computing precisely at the infrastructure of large scale research facilities like the European XFEL or PETRAIII/IV. The physics of the experiment defines requirements and functionality for high-speed high-performance real time processing. Reliable operation requires a dependable distributed infrastructure composed of thousands of custom computing nodes for data taking, processing, storage and transfer. Thus, the key question arises: How to facilitate self-diagnosis and self-healing under tight real-time and high-performance processing demands? Guided by the physicists and engineers at DESY and supervised at TUHH, the prospective PhD student will devise new concepts for self-aware distributed computing to identify and to heal faults autonomously at run time.
